FORMATION OF ORIENTAL LANGUAGE TEACHING PROFESSION: RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

Abstract

Introduction. The article deals with the issue of formation of the profession of a teacher of oriental languages, namely: the author identifies the stages and main factors that contributed to the development of this profession. Purpose. The primary objective of this research is to study the historical background of the profession of oriental language teacher, to analyze the historical stages of its formation through the prism of scientific achievements of each historical period of the century. Methods. To achieve this purpose, a set of methods was used: analysis, synthesis, comparison, systematization, generalization of theoretical material. Results. The essence and interrelation between the concepts of “oriental studies”, “orientalistics”, “orientalism” have been considered. The directions into which Orientalists traditionally divide Orientalism have been revealed. The legal framework regarding the organisation of teaching and learning of foreign languages (including Oriental languages) in educational institutions in general and in institutions of higher education in particular has been studied. Originality. Scientific relevance is connected with identifying the key factors that influenced the formation and development of the profession of a teacher of oriental languages, namely: trade and economic relations, political and diplomatic relations, cultural exchange and influence, development of science and education, and the growing importance of international cooperation and cultural exchange in the modern world. Educational institutions that train specialists in oriental languages for various fields of activity, such as education, science, translation, international relations, business and tourism, have been identified. Conclusions. The findings of the study suggest that the emergence of the profession of oriental language teacher in Ukraine is a long process that reflects the history of Ukraine’s interaction with the East. This profession remains important and in demand in the modern world, playing a key role in the development of international relations and cultural exchange. Prospects for further research are seen in the study of methods and approaches to the training of future teachers of oriental languages.
