TRANSLINGUISM AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING OF STUDENTS IN MULTICULTURAL CONDITIONS

Abstract

Introduction. The modern world in the conditions of globalization and the growth of migration is increasingly characterized by the variability and complexity of socio-cultural practices, and the communities of different countries are becoming increasingly multilingual. Such a situation requires a special approach to the organization of the educational process, which considers multilingualism as a factor of its effectiveness. In this aspect, modern foreign and Ukrainian researchers are increasingly exploiting the English-language term “translanguaging”, which is used to denote, firstly, a complex of pedagogical practices of transition from monolingual to multilingual strategies in education and, secondly, characterizes the student's ability to smoothly switch from one language to another during communication. Purpose. The purpose of the article is to study the linguodidactic phenomenon of translanguaging and analyze its role in foreign language training of students in conditions of multiculturalism in modern higher education. Methods. The following theoretical methods were utilized: analysis and synthesis – to formulate the initial provisions of the article; study, generalization and systematization of foreign and Ukrainian primary sources on the issue of the study. Results. It was found that today the concept of translanguaging goes beyond specific pedagogical practices in language teaching, penetrating into various areas of education. The concept of translanguaging involves softening the rigid boundaries that were traditionally built between languages in the educational context. Translanguaging is planned by the teacher and may concern the alternation of languages when performing various educational tasks, as well as include various planned strategies based on the use of the multilingual repertoire of students as a personal resource. Originality. The originality of the study results lies in the fact that for the first time in Ukrainian pedagogical science, the linguodidactic phenomenon of translanguaging has been studied. Conclusions. The native language is a useful tool for teaching a foreign language. Translanguaging involves not just a combination of several languages and cultures and their interaction, but rather a smooth flow from one linguoculture to another, in which the student has the opportunity to use their entire linguistic repertoire and realize their personal potential. Translanguaging ensures the development of metalinguistic awareness in students, which includes understanding their own linguistic resources, contributing to more effective use of these resource. Most often, such communicative strategies as mixing and switching of codes are exploited.
